Turkish Divorce Decree Translation for UK Marriage Notice

Uğur Arı — sworn translator, Kartal 12th Notary Office · Updated October 13, 2026

Short answer

If you were divorced in Türkiye and are giving notice of marriage in England or Wales, the register office needs proof that the earlier marriage has ended, together with an English translation. We translate the Turkish divorce judgment (boşanma ilamı) with its finality annotation (kesinleşme şerhi) and certify it the way GOV.UK describes. Turkish divorce decree translation: typically £35–£90. Send the decree first; we review it and confirm the price in writing before you pay. Payment by credit/debit card, bank transfer or Western Union.

What the register office asks for

GOV.UK’s list of documents you need to give notice includes proof that a previous marriage ended and “a translation of any documents that are not in English”. If the divorce was granted outside the UK, the register office checks it: GOV.UK lists a fee of £55 for the local register office to check your documents, or £83 if the General Register Office has to check them (checked October 13, 2026).

Under section 46 of the Family Law Act 1986, a divorce obtained by proceedings abroad is recognised if it is effective under the law of the country where it was obtained and one party was habitually resident, domiciled or a national there. The registrar makes that assessment; a translation alone does not establish recognition.

Requirements beyond GOV.UK’s list are set by the individual register office. Ask yours in writing before you order, and tell us what they said.

Divorce judgment vs. finality annotation

  • Boşanma ilamı — the Family Court’s judgment: court name and case number, the parties, the operative part ending the marriage.
  • Kesinleşme şerhi — the court’s finality annotation, stamped or attached, confirming that the appeal period has passed. Without it the judgment does not show that the divorce is effective. We translate both.
  • Nüfus kayıt örneği / e-Devlet “boşanma kaydı” — a civil registry extract that records the divorce event. It supports the judgment but does not replace it.

Which copy do you have? If you are not sure, send what you have and we tell you which document the translation should be made from before any work starts.

Certified translation vs. Turkish sworn translation

The UK has no sworn-translator system. GOV.UK asks the translator or translation company to confirm in writing that the translation is true and accurate, and to give the date, their full name and contact details. Our translations carry exactly that statement, signed and stamped by the sworn translator named below, with address, phone and e-mail.

In Türkiye the same translator is a notary-sworn translator (yeminli mütercim). That status lets us produce notarised translations for Turkish authorities; it is not a UK professional membership and we do not present it as one. See Turkish sworn translation vs. certified translation abroad.

Document first, then the quote

We do not quote from a page count you type in. Send a scan or photo of every page of the decree, say that it is for giving notice of marriage, and tell us if your register office has asked for anything specific.

We then confirm in writing which document the translation will be based on, what it will contain, the price and the delivery time. If the document you sent is not the one the translation should be made from, we say so instead of translating it. We describe GOV.UK’s requirements and prepare the translation to them; we do not decide on the register office’s behalf whether a document will be accepted.

Delivery: PDF and paper copy

You receive the certified translation as a PDF by e-mail, usually within 1–2 working days of payment for a typical decree; the exact time is in your quote.

Some register offices accept a printed PDF; others ask to see the translator’s signed copy. Ask yours. If paper is needed, we send the signed and stamped copy by courier from Türkiye on request: you can choose the courier, the recipient pays the delivery charge, and we confirm the time and cost before dispatch. We have no printing or courier partner in the UK, so plan for international delivery time.

Payment from the UK

Payment options: credit/debit card, bank transfer and Western Union. You do not have to make an international bank transfer to Türkiye to order. The payment link or transfer details are sent privately after you accept the written quote; card, bank and Western Union charges, if any, are stated in the quote.

Who signs the translation

Every translation is prepared and signed by Uğur Arı, a sworn translator whose oath is recorded at the Kartal 12th Notary Office, Istanbul. The certification names him, with address, phone and e-mail, so the registrar can contact the translator. We work from Türkiye and have no UK office; we are not members of ITI, CIOL or ATC, and no UK authority approves translators.

Price and scope

Turkish divorce decree translation: typically £35–£90. This is an estimate for a typical decree. The final price is confirmed in writing after document review; very long judgments or a different scope can be priced separately. Notarisation and physical delivery are quoted separately. Our tariff is set in Turkish lira; sterling figures are approximate and the exact amount is stated in your quote.

DocumentPrice
Turkish divorce decree (multi-page court judgment with finality annotation)Typically £35–£90; confirmed in writing after review
Standard single-page document (birth record, civil registry extract, passport, ID)850 ₺ (≈ £13.99) each
Marriage certificate / Formül B1.150 ₺ (≈ £17.99)

A multi-page divorce decree is not a “standard single-page document”; the two are priced differently. For a UK spouse or partner visa, see divorce decree translation for a UK spouse visa and the UK applications page.

FAQ
How much does it cost to translate a Turkish divorce decree for a UK register office?

Turkish divorce decree translation: typically £35–£90. The final price is confirmed in writing after we review the decree, because judgments vary in length. Notarisation and physical delivery are quoted separately. Single-page records such as a birth record cost 850 ₺ (≈ £13.99) and a marriage certificate 1.150 ₺ (≈ £17.99).

Does the translation have to be done in the UK?

No. GOV.UK describes what a certified translation must contain — a statement that it is a true and accurate translation, the date, the translator’s full name and contact details — not where the translator is based. The register office decides acceptance; ask yours in writing before you order.

What is the finality annotation (kesinleşme şerhi) and why does it matter?

It is the court’s note that the judgment is final and no appeal is pending. Section 46 of the Family Law Act 1986 recognises an overseas divorce only if it is effective under the law of the country where it was obtained, so the registrar needs to see that the divorce is final. We translate the judgment and the annotation together.

Do I need a notarised or apostilled translation to give notice of marriage?

The GOV.UK list of documents for giving notice asks for a translation of any document that is not in English; it does not list notarisation or an apostille. Only add them if your register office specifically asks, and tell us so that we quote them separately.

Will you send a paper copy to my UK address?

You receive a certified PDF by e-mail. If your register office wants a signed paper copy, we send it by courier from Türkiye on request; you can choose the courier, the recipient pays the delivery charge, and we confirm the time and cost before dispatch. We have no printing or courier partner in the UK.

Can you guarantee that my register office will accept the translation?

No one can. No UK authority approves translators or translation companies. We prepare the translation to the GOV.UK standard, name the sworn translator who signs it, and tell you which questions to put to your registrar.

Checked October 13, 2026. GOV.UK does not say who may translate; it says what the certification must contain. Register offices may ask for more. HM Passport Office follows different guidance: its paper-application guide asks for a translator who is a member of a recognised professional organisation — see the HMPO note on the UK page.
